NORMAN WG7 publishes a shortlist of contaminants for soil monitoring in Europe

NORMAN Working Group 7 (WG7 – Contaminants of Emerging Concern in Soil and the Terrestrial Environment) has prepared an expert-based shortlist of contaminants proposed for consideration in the development of the indicative list of soil contaminants required under the EU Soil Monitoring Law. The work was undertaken in response to the need for a coherent and science-based approach to support harmonised soil monitoring across Europe.

The shortlist was developed through a structured expert process combining occurrence data, hazard information, persistence, bioaccumulation and mobility properties, regulatory relevance, use patterns, and analytical feasibility. Five contaminant groups were assessed separately:

  • Industrial chemicals
  • Plant protection products (PPPs)
  • Biocides
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

The resulting shortlist contains 187 unique substances and substance groups considered priorities for future soil monitoring activities. It is intended as a scientifically informed starting point for discussions among the European Commission, Member States, researchers and monitoring experts, and will evolve as new knowledge and monitoring data become available.

At a glance

  • 187 unique substances and substance groups
  • 20 industrial chemicals
  • 69 plant protection products
  • 53 biocides
  • 21 pharmaceuticals
  • 41 POPs Downloads
