New brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are making news as "emerging substances", and together with other better known BFRs are currently being discussed extensively with regard to their potential impact on the environment and their occurrence in our food. In addition to polybrominated diphenylethers, other BFRs have been identified and analytical methods for the various BFRs are being developed and further improved. More toxicological data have become available, as well as more information on sources and behaviour of BFRs.
